trading dirt
“One day in 1983 Kaprow woke up with the idea “to do an extended piece.” It occurred to him that it might be fun to trade buckets of dirt with unsuspecting, or somewhat suspicious, others.”
“it was good dirt; we’d been working that dirt”

Closing the ‘Collapse Gap’
“My talk tonight is about the lack of collapse-preparedness here in the United States. I will compare it with the situation in the Soviet Union, prior to its collapse.”
LAPL

I headed to the Los Angeles Public Library yesterday evening in order to pick up a copy of Das Capital for the reading group this Sunday. I was absolutely astounded by the magnitude and architectural design of the building. It was amazing. 6 or 7 floors just full of books. Each floor acts as it’s own department (i.e. Philosophy, Art, Physics, Math…) and has 2-4 subjects contained within.
The whole experience of walking the halls and riding the escalators and elevators reminded me of how much I enjoy libraries. In the process of looking for the book, one woman asked me if I’d like her to tell me the fastest way to get to the floor I needed. I happily responded, “No. I’d rather wander.” It was a lot fun. Especially in a time when so much of the media we consume is digital, it’s refreshing to walk into a giant, beautifully constructed building and actually pick up and hold human knowledge. It felt like the entire worlds wisdom and experience was hidden in the many rows and floors of the building. I’ve been to the Central Library in New York and I’ve also wandered many of the 16 libraries at UCLA but I don’t think those compare the the LAPL. Another thing I thought was interesting was the many spaces created for sitting and reading. Everywhere I looked there were comfortable chairs and side tables set up for ones leisurely enjoyment, nicely lit by lamps and the overhead lights. There are also many computers scattered all over the building. I was excited to see that marriage of the digital and analog.
One last thing I’d like to say is that the Central Library is a perfect representation of the Los Angeles library system in general. It’s huge and easily accessable. You can find a book on their website by searching their database and then have it transferred to one of the MANY (I think something like 30 or so) libraires in LA. It’s amazing. Along with Das Capital I checked out 3 other books I’d been eyeing on Amazon. They were going to cost me about $100 to buy. I got them for $0. How stoked am I?
the last mass marketing

“Everybody has to shop, so the store is the last place where mass marketing exists,” says George Wishart, global managing director of Nielsen In-Store, the retail media division of the Nielsen Company. “Even better, you are reaching people who are declared shoppers. They’re there for a purpose.”
